30 Days Of Red Dead Redemption12. Favourite Quality in John Marston
Loyalty - to his wife. I think in Rockstar’s games we were used to sleeping with prostitutes, and I naturally assumed when first playing this game that I could do the same with John - whores were everywhere after all. Though I was pleasantly surprised to find that I did not even have this option, that was when I realized that John was different to Rockstar’s past characters; he had depth to him, a real story behind him.

Yeah, a lot of people complain about this, which I don’t really understand—it’s something that makes John far more of a fleshed-out character in his own right rather than just a player proxy, which is part of the reason I love this game.

Some sketches of John Marston and the Strange Man for a Red Dead comic I’m working on.
Farts are always funny, why do you disapprove, horse?

So after some studying up on this i have come to the conclusion that this is God….

There’s a lot of discussion on that, apparently—I’ve seen theories that it’s God, Death, Satan, Marston’s father, the Antichrist…none of those quite fit perfectly, which I kind of love, because the whole series of missions is just that much more mysterious and creepy when it’s never really explained.

The “I Know You” guy annoys me. So much so that every time I have the chance, I hogtie him and ride him around with me on all my missions. Take that, homie.

Okay, I actually love him because he’s so fantastically creepy and cryptic, but this is still pretty awesome.

Rockstar - I Know You [Red Dead Redemption]

[spoilers] The top-hatted character in the above video has caused many a ruction and endless debate amongst fans of Rockstar’s sublime Red Dead Redemption.

So who was ‘The Stranger’? Was he Satan? Was he Death? Could he have been ‘The Big Guy Upstairs’?

Whoever the fella was, I felt a certain sense of unease whenever he appeared on-screen, as he seemed to have an eerie omniscience about John’s life, whilst remaining rather tight-lipped about why he was lurking around in the middle of nowhere. Wonderfully creepy stuff from Rockstar. [/spoilers]

Absolutely one of my favorite stranger-mission sequences. I love the tiny, unexplained hints of the supernatural we get in this game (which makes Undead Nightmare work even better, I think), and although I’m dying to know what they mean because I’m like that, I’m happier with it being a mystery. If Rockstar ever reveals who this guy is really supposed to be (assuming they even settled on something definite themselves), I will be very sad.

For what it’s worth, I haven’t been able to make up my mind about my own opinion on the stranger’s identity—just about every theory seems to fall short at one point or another. But it’s fun to think about. (I also kind of wish it had been an even longer string of quests, preferably leading to situations that demand choices from John that are a bit more morally gray…but that’s just me.)
